It gives more options and thats what I like about it. And if I got bored of using a bow and wanted to try out javelines, i could respec instead without leveling a new character from scratch. In vanilla, I would be terrified of doing that due to limited respecs and would be forced to follow a meta build where people have already confirmed that it works. For example if im playing as an Amazon, I could test how Valkryies work with my build and respec if i dont like it. I love being able to respec because I can test lots of different options without needing to start over at square one after running out of respecs. It encourages people to not experiment unless they have the time and resources to constantly start over. Someone going "hmm, maybe i will try putting a few points into skill X instead of Y and see how this affects the synergy on this build" is going to get screwed over 99% of the time when he realises it does not work. In D2, there is so much focus on following a meta build because respecs are limited. Its like switching weapons to try it out, if you realise the new weapon isnt better, you can go back to the old one with no penalty. Thats what most RPGs allow you to do, experiment without needing to start over at square one. You play for a bit, realise that your build doesnt work, so you make changes to it. Run into a phys immune, quickly take a few points out of fanat and zeal and put them in conviction/vengeance etc. Theres no challenge in it, it just means that I sit there holding right mouse down and watch as my character slowly kills this one mob before I can keep doing my fast paced mob killing run (which is the whole point of the action rpg genre). Theres nothing like that in D2 however, so it basically boils down to "lmao you deal almost no damage now because this mob is immune to physical and fire, have fun slowly beating on it with your level 1 cold skill for the next 60 seconds". Like in dragon age, there are synergies when you freeze an enemy and use a rock spell to shatter them and you have the skill points to get multiple elemental skills, so even if something is immune to one element, you always have other options for it (and there are no mobs that are immune to physical + elemental). Immunities are fine if the game encourages you to use more than one element. The skill tree heavily penalizes you for putting points into more than one element as well. IMHO I dont like the way immunities work in D2, punishing players for specializing in one element and taking advantage of equipment/skill synergies never made sense to me. What's to stop people from respeccing to deal with inmunjties?īecause doing it everytime you run into a champion/unique with immunities on Hell is a huge pain in the ass? Not to mention that your equipment would be synergized for your main element, so you would still be less effective after respecing. I am fine with infinite and free respecs, I just wouldn't use it all the time because it's freaking annoying and you just gotta remember that sometimes you don't have to kill everything in sight. This is why I never played PoE for more than a few leagues, and why I keep going back to D3 time and time again, but on D2 I am perfectly fine with taking shortcuts if it means it removes my frustrations out of it, which is why I play D2 exclusively on SP with PlugY. I am going to get shredded for this, but infinite respecs is why Diablo 3 is the only ARPG I have played so far that I actually got to experiment with different skills and runes so I can play the game to my style.Īll other ARPGs that don't have easy respecs forces me to read up on builds before committing to play the game because I don't like wasting time replaying game content I have already seen before because my build doesn't work in hell, as forced replays completely kills experimentation, and I cannot adapt my builds to items I find as easily as I could in Diablo 3.Ī lot of posters say about the way you build a character is what makes the game great, if this was 10 years ago I would have agreed, but nowadays I no longer have the patience to replay a game several times because I didn't do my homework beforehand, which kills the fun of experimentation: the cost of such experimentation is I have to replay hours of game time.
